Covid changed the world: Why I think one element should not shift back.

Change is the only constant in life and yet it is met with resistance.

Telehealth/ Videoconferencing with your therapist was a paradigm shift for the good.

Life can be hectic, and finding time for therapy shouldn’t add to your stress. For some, finding time for lunch is a feat some days. Negotiating an early finish to duck out of the office or using your lunch break isn’t always possible. Online therapy brings professional care right to your fingertips—no commute, no hassle, just compassionate support wherever you are. Here’s why I’m advocating we keep online therapy:

1. Convenience and Comfort

Imagine attending a therapy session from the cozy corner of your home, with a cup of tea in hand. No rushing through traffic, no waiting rooms—just a space where you can feel at ease and focus on your well-being. Online therapy fits seamlessly into your life, making self-care more accessible than ever.

2. More Privacy, Less Worry

For many, the idea of walking into a therapy office can feel intimidating. With online sessions, you don’t have to worry about bumping into someone you know in the waiting room. Your therapy experience stays completely private, allowing you to open up in a way that feels safe and comfortable.

There is no jogging down the terrace to get to our meeting or rushing back so no one noticed you were gone. No missed lunch breaks or negotiating for time with your boss either. While some clients still use flexible working arrangements to attend during business hours, it is far more discrete to log on from your office or a quite spot, so avoiding awkward conversations with colleagues who are curious about where you go every week.

3. Flexible Scheduling That Works for You

Life is busy, and finding time for therapy shouldn’t be a struggle. Virtual sessions offer more flexible appointment times, including evenings and weekends, so you can fit therapy into your schedule without the added stress of rearranging your day.

4. Support That Moves With You

Whether you’re moving, traveling, or simply juggling a lot, videoconferencing ensures your therapy continues uninterrupted. No need to pause your progress—your therapist is just a click away, ready to support you no matter where life takes you. I’ve had people log in from Germany, Bali or interstate.

5. It Really Works!

Research shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for many mental health concerns, like anxiety, depression, and stress management (King, Luninging, 20/11/2021, Distance Counseling: Analyzing the Efficacy of Online Therapy). There is also evidence that online is just as effective as in person for less common presentations (see study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8956990/)

6. A Great Option for NDIS Participants

If you’re receiving NDIS support, online therapy can be a game-changer. It removes transportation barriers and makes it easier to get the consistent, high-quality care you deserve, all from the comfort of home and saves budget as the provider won’t need to charge for travel.
